Bangladesh Power Cuts Worsen as LNG Supplies Plummet

Bangladesh's energy crisis has worsened due to a decline in LNG supplies amid rough weather in the Bay of Bengal, leading to a three-week low in total gas availability.

The country's daily gas demand is about 3,800 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), but supply has fallen to around 2,100 mmcfd. Domestic gas fields contribute approximately 1,630 mmcfd, while the two floating LNG terminals together supplied up to 410 mmcfd.

The Excelerate terminal, which was involved in an accident on July 21 and halted supply, partly resumed operation on August 5 but is still not operating at full capacity. The Summit-operated terminal started reducing supply since August 10 as they were unable to unload LNG from tankers due to rough weather.

The loss of that LNG supply is now being felt in the power sector. Gas-fired power plants are unable to generate as per demand due to inadequate gas supply, said Anindya Islam Amit, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources.
