Bangladesh Seeks Gas Imports from Myanmar Amid Domestic Decline
Bangladesh is exploring alternative sources of natural gas as domestic production declines. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood recently met with Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe to discuss importing gas from Myanmar through a pipeline.
The proposal for the pipeline was made in an effort to revive bilateral energy cooperation between the two countries. Bangladesh is interested in securing natural gas supplies from Myanmar, particularly through a pipeline.
The meeting also discussed reviving an earlier proposal to build a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram. The two sides also explored the possibility of supplying gas to Bangladesh in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
