Bangladesh Seeks US Help to Meet Growing LNG Needs Amid Gas Shortage

The US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, visited Bangladesh during a critical time for the country's energy sector. An acute gas shortage is disrupting industries, transport, households, and power generation, while the US has emerged as the world's largest LNG exporter.

Bangladesh is seeking deeper cooperation with the US in meeting its growing LNG requirements. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs recently gave in-principle approval to importing LNG from Gunvor USA LLC under a government-to-government arrangement, covering both short- and long-term contracts.

The deal would see Gunvor supply six LNG cargoes annually for 13 years, from 2026 to 2039. However, Bangladesh should look beyond this single procurement arrangement and develop a broader and more strategic framework for LNG cooperation with the US.
