Bangladesh's Energy Crisis Deepens Amid LNG Supply Disruption

Bangladesh's energy crisis has worsened after one of its floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals ran out of gas, causing a significant drop in LNG supplies to the national grid.

The disruption has resulted in a total gas supply of around 1,930 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), which is far below the daily demand of approximately 3,800 mmcfd. The shortage has severely impacted major industrial zones, CNG-based transport, and household cooking, while curtailing gas-fired power generation across Bangladesh.

Residents in several districts are struggling to cook amid nearly zero gas pressure, leading to widespread discontent. In Narayanganj, 30 of the 33 CNG filling stations have halted vehicle refuelling, with auto-rickshaw drivers blocking a highway in Jamalpur to demand regular gas supplies.

The deepening energy crisis has taken a toll on electricity supply, with load shedding reported in parts of Dhaka from Thursday midnight. Officials from Dhaka Power Distribution Company and DESCO said that power generation came under mounting pressure due to the gas shortage.
