Bangladesh's Gas Crisis Worsens as Excelerate Terminal Shuts Down Again

Bangladesh is facing a severe gas crisis, and it just got worse. On Thursday afternoon, the Excelerate terminal shut down due to a technical fault, stopping all LNG supplies. The situation was already dire since a fire at Excelerate's terminal on July 21 severely curtailed gas supplies.

However, there is some good news: a new vessel carrying LNG arrived in the Bay of Bengal on Friday evening and will be transferred to Summit's terminal overnight. This means that gas supplies from Summit's terminal have resumed on a limited scale.

Summit's terminal can process 500 million cubic feet per day, and once it ramps up output to its full capacity, total LNG supply will reach 800 million cubic feet. This will bring national daily supply up to 2.43 billion cubic feet, offering partial relief from the acute crisis.

The government has been trying to tackle the energy emergency, but there are no immediate quick fixes. Industry experts note that operations are largely reliant on favourable weather conditions.
