Bangladesh's Staple Prices Surge as Global Conflict and Energy Shortages Bite
Wholesale prices of staples like wheat, edible oil, sugar, and others have skyrocketed since early August in Bangladesh. The brief stability that followed a cut in import taxes on these commodities has been short-lived. Global freight costs, energy shortages, and renewed conflict have overwhelmed the market.
Traders are entitled to reclaim advance income tax, but authorities offset this against other liabilities rather than issuing immediate refunds. This reduction should have lowered retail prices, but external and domestic pressures have undermined that relief.
Global freight rates have climbed, while the war in Iran and Russia-Ukraine conflict have escalated. Domestically, energy deficits have driven up production and transport costs for numerous goods, spurring a fresh rise in wholesale consumer prices in August.
