Bayer's Short-Stature Corn Yields Promise

Bayer's Ground Breakers field trial program has been scaling up short-stature corn since 2025, with over 85,000 acres of participation from grain and silage operations. The company aims to reach a yield comparable to traditional hybrids while reducing plant height to 6-7 feet.

Penney explained that the dwarfed heights in hybrids are achieved by limiting the internal transport of auxin, a plant growth hormone responsible for cell elongation. This results in shorter stalks and ears remaining the same size.

The new GM offering from Bayer depends on suppressing the plant's biosynthetic gibberellic acid (GA) genes and influencing every node both above and below the ear. Preceon hybrids developed through breeding traits reduce node elongation below the ear leaf, leading to more consistent ear placement.
