BC Approves Tilbury LNG Expansion with Conditions

The British Columbia government has issued an environmental assessment certificate for the Tilbury Phase 2 liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility expansion, allowing the project to move forward with permitting. The certificate includes 18 conditions related to air quality, wildlife protection, and greenhouse-gas reduction measures.

FortisBC estimates that the expansion could generate up to 6,200 full-time-equivalent person-years of employment during construction and approximately 100 new long-term permanent operational jobs, as well as contribute as much as $1.7 billion to provincial gross domestic product (GDP) during construction.

The project was assessed by the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO), which concluded that it would not cause significant adverse effects once mitigation measures are applied. The EAO worked with 12 participating Indigenous Nations and consulted with an additional 13 groups throughout the assessment process.
