BC Issues EA Certificate for FortisBC's Tilbury LNG Expansion
The Province of British Columbia has issued an environmental assessment certificate to FortisBC for its Tilbury Phase 2 LNG expansion project. This certification is a crucial step forward for the project, which will allow it to proceed.
The expansion involves adding a large new storage tank and equipment capable of producing up to 7,700 tonnes of liquefied natural gas per day within FortisBC's existing Tilbury facility footprint. The facility provides backup supply to the Lower Mainland gas system during periods of peak demand and produces LNG for domestic and international markets.
According to the environmental assessment certificate, the project will provide employment, contracting, procurement, and training opportunities during construction and operations. It is also expected to contribute to economic activity and tax revenues, as well as support energy resiliency in the Lower Mainland through additional natural-gas storage capacity.
