BC LNG Projects Emerge as Leaders in Innovation and Emissions Reduction

Canada's innovation struggles have been well-documented in recent years, but a shining exception can be found on the West Coast. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) buildout in British Columbia is emerging as a bright spot for applied innovation.

The project has seen significant advancements in reducing emissions, with the Woodfibre LNG facility near Squamish designed around electric drive compressors powered by B.C.'s hydroelectric grid. This electrified design alone avoids roughly 230,470 tonnes of CO2e a year compared to a gas-fired plant.

Cedar LNG, located in Kitimat, has also reached a positive final investment decision and is expected to be one of the lowest-emitting LNG facilities in the world. The project is majority-owned by the Haisla Nation at 50.1%, with Pembina holding 49.9%. This structure has been framed as a model for economic participation.

The buildout is also forcing innovation in upstream emissions control, where the B.C. Montney can pursue two main decarbonization pathways: electrifying industrial facilities and deploying large-scale carbon capture and storage. The potential to cut upstream gas emissions by 2-3 megatonnes of CO2e per year is significant.

Industry advocates argue that B.C. LNG's comparative advantage lies in its technical capabilities, with colder ambient temperatures reducing energy requirements for liquefaction, shorter shipping distances to Asia from the West Coast, and tighter methane controls in Western Canada all contributing to lower lifecycle emissions.
