British Columbia Premier David Eby has defended his government's decision to exempt a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project from regulatory approval, citing a 'big tent' approach that allows for criticism within cabinet. Kelly Greene, minister of emergency management and climate readiness, posted a statement on Friday expressing her disappointment in the plan to expand the Tilbury LNG facility, citing safety concerns.

The expansion would produce more LNG to meet rising demand at the Port of Vancouver and improve access to fueling for vessels traveling the coast and across the Pacific. However, Greene represents the riding of Richmond-Steveston, where the project is located, and has been a vocal critic of the plan.

Eby said that his government's approach allows ministers to speak out against decisions with which they disagree. 'This is an issue that has been important to Kelly Greene as an MLA for her community for a long time,' Eby stated. 'We worked together on her statement, so she was able to continue advocating, and I supported her ability to do that.'

The government announced that the project would remain subject to all other applicable regulatory approvals and permitting requirements before construction begins, which could start by mid-2024 with operation starting as early as 2031.
