Beetaloo Basin Flows Natural Gas Amidst Ongoing Middle East Conflict
The Beetaloo shale gas basin in northern Australia has marked a milestone in its development, with the first natural gas flowing from an appraisal well to a new pipeline connected to an existing one.
The initial flow is modest at 40 terajoules (37 million cubic feet) per day and will be fed into the Northern Territory's grid for electricity, industrial, and household use.
The potential of Beetaloo is vast, with recoverable natural gas reserves estimated to be at least 200 trillion cubic feet, comparable to the Marcellus shale in the United States.
Australia is the world's third-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and there are hopes that Beetaloo can increase its LNG profile, particularly with the current crisis in the Middle East tightening global supply.
