Beetaloo Gas Pipeline Sparks Concern Over Price Manipulation

The Australian gas export cartel has been accused of manipulating prices to benefit from cheap domestic gas.

A recent chart shows that global gas prices have skyrocketed, but Australian prices are capped at $12Gj by the government, allowing the cartel to sell low-cost gas locally and export more expensive gas.

APA Group is building a pipeline to connect the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory to the east coast, which would enable gas from the region to reach LNG export plants more easily.

The Beetaloo Basin has an estimated 7500Pj of gas as 2C reserves, enough to feed the entire East Coast for 14 years. However, the proposed domestic reservation policy could make this expensive gas uncompetitive in the local market.
