Bhola Gas Pipeline Project Stalls Amid LNG Imports
Despite gas reserves discovered in Bhola over two decades ago, the construction of a pipeline to transport it remains stalled. The project's initial estimated cost was a mere BDT 6 billion in 2018, but plans were scrapped due to concerns over economic risks and indecision.
The ousted Awami League government was accused of favoring LNG imports while neglecting domestic gas production. As a result, the country has had to spend a significant amount on importing LNG, with BDT 2.77 trillion spent during the eight years from fiscal year 2018-19 through 2025-26.
Energy experts believe that extracting Bhola's gas and transporting it through a pipeline would be the most cost-effective solution, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening energy security.
