BHP Leans Heavily on Copper as Earnings Growth Engine
BHP Group, an Australian multinational mining and resources company, is placing greater emphasis on copper as its growth engine. In FY26, copper production was approximately two million tonnes for a second consecutive year, while copper contributed more than half of underlying EBITDA.
The company's earnings are influenced by commodity prices, production volumes, operating costs, project execution, and capital allocation. BHP reported underlying EBITDA of approximately US$33 billion for FY26, with an increase of about 30% from the prior year.
Copper has become a larger contributor to earnings, with iron ore remaining a major contributor. The company is advancing several large-scale developments, including the Escondida concentrator and Ministers North, which require disciplined capital management.
