Biofuel Mandates Exacerbate Global Food Security Crisis
The Middle East crisis has led to a surge in global biofuel mandates, which is putting further strain on already tight food and fertiliser markets. The US-Israel war with Iran has disrupted supply chains and destabilised energy, fertiliser, and food markets.
Rising demand for biofuels as alternative sources to increasingly expensive fossil fuels threatens to worsen the unfolding food crisis. Key food commodities like vegetable oils, sugar, and corn are being diverted from food supplies, exacerbating the global food security 'perfect storm' feared by international bodies.
The world's top biofuel-producing nations, including the US, Brazil, India, and Indonesia, are ramping up their biofuel targets. This could lead to a 70% surge in global biofuel demand by 2030, further depleting fertiliser volumes and driving up food prices.
