Biogas Poised to Displace Fossil Gas as Global Demand Surges
Sustainable biogas could replace up to 25% of global natural gas demand, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the World Biogas Association (WBA).
Delorean Corporation, an ASX-listed company, is positioning itself for a nationwide rollout of bioenergy facilities that can produce renewable natural gas tied to the network.
Co-founder and managing director Joe Oliver said, 'It makes it easier and more bankable to build multiple facilities.'
The global biogas market is valued at up to US$90 billion and is projected to scale to US$128 billion by 2034. Multiple streams are available in Australia, including commercially viable sewage treatment and biomethane production.
Rising landfill levies are also proving to be an incentive to roll out anaerobic digestion, as Delorean's revenue streams already include biomethane and liquid carbon dioxide offtake agreements with Origin Energy (ASX:ORG) and Supagas totalling $55 million from its SA1 Salisbury bioenergy facility in South Australia.
Oliver noted that the focus on hydrogen has taken attention away from biogas, saying, 'Australia has probably taken its eye off the ball... there was a lot of political pressure as well as large corporates going down that path.'
