Bitcoin Rally Faces Key Test Amid Cooling Derivatives Demand
Bitcoin's recent rally is facing a key test as it struggles to extend beyond its current levels, despite institutional demand and spot ETF inflows remaining supportive. The broader cryptocurrency market has risen by 0.3% over the past day, with Bitcoin itself gaining 0.4% to trade above $83,400.
The cooling in speculative futures activity is a concern for analysts, who note that growth in this area has declined sharply from 164,000 BTC on September 14 to just 16,000 BTC on September 29 - a decline of over 90% in 15 days. This slowdown in derivatives demand comes at a difficult time, with US Treasury yields rising and oil prices remaining above $100 a barrel amid the US-Iran impasse.
However, institutional spot demand has continued to provide support for Bitcoin, with US spot Bitcoin ETFs recording eight consecutive sessions of inflows totalling around $3 billion. Analysts believe that this demand is becoming increasingly important as speculative futures activity stalls, and may be helping to offset some of the leverage that previously supported Bitcoin's momentum.
