Bitcoin Surges Past $72,000 Amid Iran-US Tensions and Oil Price Volatility
Amidst the ongoing Iran-US tensions, Bitcoin has emerged as an unexpected safe-haven asset, outperforming gold, silver, and even major broad market indices since the conflict began in January. The cryptocurrency surged nearly 10% to above $72,000 since the initial US-Israel airstrikes on Iran.
This rally comes as oil prices jumped sharply, with crude oil trading well above $95 per barrel mark, a 40% increase since the start of the war. Experts attribute the surge in Bitcoin's price to its ability to act as a sentiment-driven diversifier during times of geopolitical uncertainty.
A study published last year found that cryptocurrency trading volumes increase during global crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and previous conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war. However, it noted that Bitcoin may not provide effective portfolio hedging compared to traditional safe-haven assets.
