Black Sea Conflict Escalates as Grain Exports and Shipping Come Under Fire
Russian and Ukrainian attacks on vessels and port infrastructure in the Black Sea have escalated, threatening commercial shipping and grain exports.
The conflict has disrupted routes for both grain and energy, prompting warnings that it could further pressure global food supplies this autumn. Russia's missile and drone strikes have targeted Ukraine's main ports, including Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi, as well as vessels using the maritime corridor.
Ukraine has also expanded its attacks on tankers and cargo ships it says support Russian military logistics and energy exports in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
As a result, Ukraine's capacity to export grain through its Black Sea ports has fallen by about a third, from around 6 million tons per month to 4 million tons. Some shipowners have temporarily suspended calls at Ukrainian ports following deadly strikes.
