Black Sea Conflict Sparks Wheat Price Rally Amid European Heatwave
The conflict in the Black Sea has caused logistical hurdles for wheat exports from the region. Russian shipping company FESCO suspended applications for shipments due to increased risks, which will continue until the waterway is fully reopened. Wheat prices were supported as two cargo vessels in the Black Sea were attacked by Russian forces, further exacerbating concerns over vessel traffic and export capacity.
US wheat exports have been disappointing, but the situation overseas has taken center stage. The European heatwave has had a significant impact on grain production, with the U.K. expecting its smallest harvest since 1984 and French crops down by over 20% year on year.
Despite these challenges, some analysts remain bullish on global wheat fundamentals. Managed funds are long KC wheat but short Chicago, anticipating a potential shift in prices as exports from the Black Sea continue to face difficulties.
