Black Sea Conflict Threatens Global Grain Supplies as Buyers Turn to Alternatives
Attacks in the Black Sea region are disrupting global grain and oil supplies. Major crop buyers across Asia, including Indonesia and Bangladesh, have started to turn to alternative suppliers due to the escalation of attacks on Ukrainian and Russian ports.
The region is one of the world's top suppliers of grain and sunflower oil, with Ukraine and Russia accounting for more than a quarter of global wheat exports. The conflict has pushed Chicago futures up about 15% since the end of June.
Bloomberg reports that Indonesia recently picked up cargoes from Australia for September and October, while other Southeast Asian nations have also booked Australian wheat for similar periods. Inquiries have also been made as far as North America.
