Black Sea Drone Attacks Escalate Tensions and Grain Market Volatility
Tensions in the Black Sea have escalated, with drone attacks on commercial ships off the coast of Bulgaria sparking concerns among grain traders. On Tuesday, drones hit two ships, sinking one and setting another on fire. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev noted that the drones likely originated from either Russia or Ukraine, though the exact source remains unclear. The incidents mark a significant expansion of the conflict's reach, now affecting the exclusive economic zones of NATO members Romania and Bulgaria.
The attacks have raised fears about the safety of grain shipments and alternative trade routes. Andrey Sizov of consulting firm SovEcon noted that this appears to be the first reported drone attack on merchant vessels inside Bulgaria’s EEZ, suggesting Russia may be targeting Ukraine’s Danube ports. The disruption has contributed to a surge in grain futures, with wheat prices climbing alongside concerns over deteriorating corn and soybean conditions.
In other markets, December corn rose 10 ¾ cents to $5.08, while November soybeans gained 22 ¼ cents to $13.03. December soybean meal and soybean oil also saw gains, with meal rising $7.70 to $354.80 and oil increasing by 56 points to 69.91 cents. Wheat futures similarly saw increases, with December SRW wheat rising 12 cents to $7.04 ¼, and December HRW wheat gaining 14 cents to close at $7.56 ¼.
Away from the Black Sea, oil tanker captains in the Gulf are being paid significantly higher rates to navigate through the Strait of Hormuz due to increased attacks by Iran. Captains are earning the equivalent of $100,000 a month, plus a $50,000 bonus per trip, as the threat of assaults on vessels has surged. Meanwhile, farmer sentiment in the U.S. has declined, with high input costs cited as the top concern by a record 52% of respondents in a recent survey. Land O’Lakes CEO Beth Ford highlighted growing financial pressures on farmers, noting a tenfold increase in reserve loan demand at the company’s financing arm.
