Black Sea Grain Trade Collapses Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has escalated to new heights, affecting global grain supplies. The conflict is disrupting maritime trade in the Black Sea, which is crucial for the export of wheat, corn, and other agricultural commodities from both countries.
Russia struck at Izmail, Ukraine's largest Danube port, overnight Thursday, causing damage to port infrastructure and starting a fire. Just 24 hours earlier, Ukraine launched hundreds of drones, missiles, and uncrewed boats against Novorossiysk, Russia's main Black Sea export hub.
The commercial impact is significant, with three major grain terminals at Novorossiysk reported damaged and two suspending operations. This has turned an escalating security crisis for merchant shipping into a serious global grain supply problem.
