Black Sea Peace Hopes Temper Wheat Market Volatility
Wheat markets have been volatile over the past month due to concerns about the Black Sea conflict. This week, hopes for peace between Russia and Ukraine led to a slight easing in prices, with Chicago wheat falling 1% and ASX wheat dropping 3%. However, despite this brief respite, volatility is likely to continue.
The situation remains complex, with Ukraine producing more grain but struggling to export it due to Black Sea access constraints. This has led to a record carryover of almost 25Mt in Ukraine, which could eventually return to the market if shipping conditions improve significantly.
In related news, the US Department of Agriculture lifted global wheat production to 822.4Mt and ending stocks to 276.3Mt in its September World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE). Australia was among the biggest gainers, with its crop lifted by 3Mt to 31Mt.
