Black Sea Port Shutdown Threatens Ukraine Wheat Exports

The suspension of Ukraine's Black Sea ports due to Russian attacks is expected to have a significant impact on wheat exports, according to Taras Kovatsenko, Commercial Director of Vilia. He notes that more than 85% of Ukraine's grain exports are typically shipped by sea.

This situation is reminiscent of 2022 when global grain prices were not the main concern, but rather the ability to export the harvest at all. The remaining alternative export channels, such as Danube ports and overland routes, have a combined capacity that is far from sufficient to replace the Black Sea corridor.

Kovatsenko believes wheat will be the most vulnerable crop under these conditions due to limited domestic consumption in Ukraine and the fact that Europe is not a traditional destination for Ukrainian wheat. The EU reinstated import quotas last year, but Ukraine's quota has already been exhausted.

As a result, wheat can only be exported through longer logistics routes using ports in Poland or Romania, which have a significantly lower capacity than required. This will lead to a significant decline in market liquidity and the sharpest price drop among major crops.
