Black Sea Tensions Drive Chicago Wheat Futures to Three-Year High
Chicago wheat futures have reached a three-year high due to ongoing tensions in the Black Sea region. The market remains focused on military escalation, which has halted grain exports from Russia and Ukraine. Most-active wheat rose to $7.90-1/4 per bushel, its highest level since February 2023.
A report emerged that Russia is considering increasing missile strikes on Ukraine, dimming hopes for a swift recovery in Black Sea shipments. The recent tit-for-tat attacks have brought grain loadings at Russian and Ukrainian ports to a virtual halt.
The incident of a commercial vessel sinking off the coast of Romania in the Black Sea has further heightened concerns about war risks to shipping in the area. Ukrainian officials stated that the 2027 planting campaign is at risk due to farmers' lack of funds, as Russia's blockade of sea ports has curtailed exports.
