Black Sea Tensions Drive European Wheat Prices Higher
European wheat prices have surged due to dwindling hopes for peace in the Black Sea region. Euronext wheat prices rose by 0.9% on Monday, reaching EUR 243.75 (USD 279.63) per ton. This increase comes as Russia-Ukraine strikes have severely impacted exports via the Black Sea.
The Russian government has been forced to use alternative export routes, but volumes remain significantly lower than normal levels. Chicago wheat futures also jumped nearly 2% on Monday, driven by rising corn prices and optimism surrounding the upcoming US-China summit.
The strikes have effectively halted Russian and Ukrainian exports via the Black Sea, resulting in a significant shortage of wheat supplies in Europe. The situation has led to increased demand for alternative export routes, further driving up prices.
