Blackrod Oil Sands Facility Beats Schedules with First Barrel Production

The Blackrod oil sands facility in northern Alberta has reached a major milestone by producing its first barrels on May 31, beating schedules. The project, which began steam injection in December 2025, has shown promising results with the thermal chamber growing faster than anticipated.

Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is a technique used to extract heavy oil from bitumen saturated sand. In this process, high-pressure steam is injected through an upper horizontal well, heating the surrounding sand until the bitumen's viscosity decreases and it flows downward into the producing well below.

The Blackrod project has been in development for over a decade, with Phase 1 carrying 311 million barrels of oil equivalent in proved and probable reserves. The operator controls a 100% working interest, allowing for full flexibility over future expansion phases.

As the facility ramps up production, engineers will closely monitor the steam-to-oil ratio, which is expected to decline as the thermal chamber matures. A lower ratio reduces natural gas consumption, water treatment requirements, and operating costs per barrel.
