BNP Paribas Wins Regional HQ License in Saudi Arabia Amid Riyadh's Financial Hub Ambitions
BNP Paribas, France's largest bank, has been granted a regional headquarters license in Saudi Arabia. This move is part of the kingdom's strategy to position Riyadh as the Gulf region's primary financial hub.
The license was announced during a meeting between Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih and BNP Paribas Chairman Jean Lemierre. The bank already has offices in five countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
Saudi Arabia's government is aggressively encouraging multinational corporations to relocate their regional headquarters to Riyadh as part of its economic reform initiative, 'Vision 2030.' This plan aims to reduce dependence on oil and develop Riyadh into a business and financial center.
As part of this effort, the government has stated that companies without a regional headquarters in Riyadh risk losing opportunities for government contracts. BNP Paribas's move is seen as evidence that these policies are producing tangible results.
