Oil Prices Tumble Amid Growing Faith in Iran Off-Ramp
The price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil (WTI) dropped by 3.25% to $82.25 on Tuesday, following a two-day decline that saw prices fall by 5.5%. This move is seen as a sign of the market's growing faith in a negotiated off-ramp for the Iran conflict.
The price drop comes despite an escalation package announced by Washington on Monday, which included sanctions against nearly 60 corporations and individuals facilitating Iranian trade. However, the package did not include immediate enforcement against key countries such as China, Iran's largest crude buyer.
A diplomatic breakthrough appears to be underway, with Pakistan's army chief visiting Tehran and carrying a proposal for potential sanctions relief under an existing memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.
