Bond Sell-Off Pressure Eases as Global Shares Make Gains
Global shares made gains on Friday, following a global bond sell-off that pushed US Treasury yields to their highest in years. The bond market appeared to have stabilized after another sell-off. US futures rose by 0.3 per cent, with the S&P 500 futures leading the charge.
The FTSE 100 climbed 0.5 per cent to 10,733.65, while France's CAC 40 and Germany's DAX advanced 0.5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 1.3 per cent to 66,364.20.
The US dollar fell to 157.91 Japanese yen from 158.86 yen. The euro rose slightly to $1.1389. Oil prices fell early Friday as investors look for signs of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with Brent crude dropping 1.7 per cent to $98.52 per barrel.
The meeting in Washington between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping has garnered attention from investors, although analysts say limited concrete progress has been made on key issues such as trade, artificial intelligence, and the Middle East.
