Braun Extends Gas Tax Holiday Amid Global Energy Disruptions

Indiana Governor Mike Braun has extended the state's gas tax holiday through September 5th due to ongoing disruptions in the global energy market. The original emergency declaration, tied to oil shipping problems from the Iran conflict, was set to expire today.

The governor cited Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities and Canadian wildfires affecting the Alberta Oil Sands Region as reasons for the new declaration. To avoid needing a special legislative session, Braun issued a separate energy emergency order based on these new factors.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita stated that the state's law does not prohibit declaring separate emergencies for different reasons. The new energy emergency will take effect this Friday and marks the third extension of the gas tax holiday since its implementation in the spring.
