Brazil Pioneers Flex-Fuel Technology to Reduce Dependence on Imported Petroleum
Ethanol's potential as a cleaner and more sustainable transportation fuel has been a long time coming. Its history dates back to the early 19th century, when it was first used in lamps and small engines.
Nikolaus Otto experimented with alcohol-based fuels during the development of the internal combustion engine in the 1860s. Henry Ford also viewed ethanol as a promising automotive fuel, building one of his early experimental vehicles to run on ethanol in 1893.
However, it wasn't until Brazil began exploring ethanol as a substitute for imported gasoline in the 1920s that large-scale adoption became a reality. In 1931, the Brazilian government mandated a 5 percent ethanol blend in gasoline to reduce fuel imports and support sugarcane farmers.
The defining moment came after the 1973 global oil crisis, when Brazil launched the Programa Nacional do Álcool (Proálcool) to reduce dependence on imported petroleum. The programme was backed by government support, including subsidized credit, guaranteed ethanol prices, tax incentives, and investment in distilleries.
Brazilian automobile manufacturers responded enthusiastically, introducing vehicles capable of operating entirely on hydrous ethanol (E100). By 1985, nearly 90 percent of all new vehicles sold in Brazil were powered by ethanol. However, the programme encountered difficulties during the late 1980s due to falling international oil prices and rising sugar prices.
The experience led to one of Brazil's most significant technological innovations, the development of flex-fuel vehicles. In 2003, Volkswagen introduced the first modern Brazilian flex-fuel car capable of automatically operating on any combination of gasoline and ethanol without requiring driver intervention.
