Brazil's Distillers Grains Market Driven by Local Logistics

Brazil's expanding corn ethanol industry is boosting production of distillers grains (DG), a key feed ingredient, with China emerging as a major buyer. However, the market for DG in Brazil is shaped more by regional logistics than national export figures, according to Larissa Alvarez, Senior Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX. Prices and availability of DG are heavily influenced by proximity to ethanol plants, particularly in Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás, where most corn ethanol is produced.

Alvarez notes that while exports to China are rising, increased corn ethanol output in Brazil is keeping pace, ensuring that domestic supply remains stable. This balance means that DG prices have not faced sustained upward pressure, even during strong export demand. For Brazilian cattle producers, local conditions near ethanol plants are just as important as export trends when it comes to DG costs.

The relationship between DG and corn prices serves as a critical indicator of market supply and demand. When DG remains competitive against corn, it signals that ethanol production is generating enough supply to meet both export and livestock needs. Alvarez highlights this price ratio as one of the most useful tools for assessing the health of Brazil's DG market.
