Brazil's Economic Giants Hide Valuable Opportunities
Brazil's economy is an often-overlooked giant in Latin America, but it holds potential opportunities for investors. Despite facing challenges such as high interest rates and fiscal issues, Brazil's domestic consumer activity and commodity exports are strong drivers of growth. The country's upcoming presidential election will set the agenda for economic policies moving into 2027.
Resilient private consumption has been a key factor in Brazil's economic expansion since the pandemic, accounting for around 60% of GDP. However, central government primary deficits have widened significantly due to mandatory pension outlays and exceptions to national fiscal rules. Treasury Secretary Daniel Leal has signaled that total spending as a share of GDP should decelerate towards 19% in the second half of the year.
The Brazilian real is sitting at historic lows despite a recent rally, while gross public debt stands near 81% of GDP and the Selic policy rate remains elevated at 14.25%. Despite these challenges, Brazil's equities offer attractive value plays due to deep discounts in MSCI Brazil relative to broader emerging markets.
MSCI Brazil's trailing P/E (9.59) and forward P/E (8.00) trade at steep discounts relative to MSCI EM (18.61/11.65) and MSCI ACWI (23.64/17.78). The country's strong structural drivers include agribusiness exports in soybeans, corn, and beef, as well as global trade footprints in crude oil and iron ore.
