Brazil's Grain Export Plans Spark Concerns Over Madeira River Safety

The Madeira River in Brazil has become a focal point for controversy surrounding the expansion of grain exports. Despite recent fatal barge collisions, the government is pushing forward with plans to dredge the river and increase traffic.

A mother and her three children died when a soybean-laden barge collided with their stilt house on January 17, 2025. Four months later, another freight vessel hit three mining barges anchored in a neighboring community, causing significant damage and loss of life.

The communities along the river are worried about the increased risk of accidents, particularly during the high-water season when the banks are flooded. The residents rely on the river for transportation, trade, and access to basic necessities like doctors and schools.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has ordered the inclusion of the Madeira waterway in the country's privatization program, aiming to boost cargo capacity through private management and regular dredging. However, this move has been met with resistance from Indigenous groups who claim that they were not consulted about the expansion.
