Brazil's Renewable Energy Sector Surges with 85% of Capacity Now Clean
Brazil's renewable energy sector is thriving, with nearly 85% of the country's installed generation capacity coming from clean sources. In August, a total of 1.68 GW of new solar, wind, and thermal power was connected to the grid, bringing the country's total installed capacity to 221 GW.
The majority of the new capacity came from solar energy, with 3.5 GW added since the beginning of 2026. This growth is part of Brazil's ongoing transition towards a greener energy mix, which aims to reduce dependence on oil, coal, and natural gas.
The World Bank has approved a $500 million loan to support low-carbon industrial goods, clean fuels, and infrastructure in northeastern Brazil. The project will also focus on developing the region's renewable energy resources, which are largely untapped.
