Brent Crude Oil Price Surpasses $100 as US-Iran Tensions Escalate
The Brent crude oil price surged past $100 per barrel for the first time since July, driven by rising market concerns over potential disruptions to Middle Eastern energy supplies due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The increase in oil prices also weighed on market sentiment, with U.S. stock index futures continuing to decline.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.2% in the previous trading session, marking its largest single-day decline in nearly three weeks. This was partly due to rising crude oil prices intensifying inflation concerns, which caused the yield on the 10-year US Treasury note to briefly breach the closely watched 4.8% threshold.
Kara Murphy, Chief Investment Officer at Kestra Investment Management, stated that this recent decline is somewhat akin to a minor speed bump, as attention has shifted toward risk factors with less earnings-related content available for market focus.
