Brent Crude Prices Spike Above $100 Amid Middle East Tensions
Brent crude prices have breached the $100 per barrel mark as tensions in the Middle East escalate and disruptions to Red Sea shipping routes continue. Investors are focusing on the risk of a wider conflict involving Iran, which is fueling concerns over supply security and higher freight costs.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, located at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, accounts for a significant portion of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas transportation. Disruptions to these routes would lead to alternative routes being taken by vessels, increasing transportation costs.
Industry experts are forecasting a demand for global oil exceeding 104 million barrels per day this year, while OPEC+ is managing production levels through voluntary output cuts. The lack of spare capacity on the production side makes markets vulnerable to surprise disruptions.
