Brent Crude Surges Past $107 per Barrel Amid Iran Tensions
Oil prices surged to their highest levels since before the summer as tensions with Iran continue to disrupt global crude supplies. Brent crude, the international standard, rose 6.3% and briefly topped $108 per barrel for the first time since May, settling at $107.63.
The jump in oil prices has severe consequences, including higher gasoline costs and increased expenses for goods transported by truck to store shelves. The average price of regular gasoline in the US has reached nearly $4.28 a gallon, a 34% increase from last year.
The rising oil prices also fueled inflation concerns, with wholesale inflation accelerating to 5.4% in August from 4.8% in July. This could lead retailers to pass on higher costs to consumers.
