Brent Crude Tops $100 as Middle East Tensions Escalate

Brent crude oil futures have broken above the $100 barrier for the first time since July 24, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and concerns over oil flows from the region.

The price of Brent crude rose $2.15 to $100.07 a barrel on Wednesday, while US West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to $94.73 a barrel. This increase marks a quarter rise in prices since early last month as hopes for a permanent resolution to the US-Iran conflict have faded.

The recent attacks by Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi energy facilities have heightened fears of a significant expansion of the conflict, threatening crude shipments via the Red Sea and potentially disrupting flows through the crucial Strait of Hormuz. With global oil supply expected to fall this year by 4.3 million barrels a day, or about 4%, according to the International Energy Agency, several major banks have raised their crude price forecasts.

A number of prominent financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and HSBC, have increased their crude price predictions in recent days as market uncertainty grows. Despite non-OPEC oil producers such as the United States, Canada, and Guyana ramping up output, concerns over supply disruptions and falling production levels are driving prices higher.
