Brent Oil Surges Past $100 on Escalating Middle East Tensions
Brent oil prices surged past $100 per barrel for the first time in two months on Wednesday, driven by rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to global energy flows.
The conflict between the US and Iran has continued unabated, with the latest bout of escalation seeing the US military strike five Iranian crude oil tankers in response to what it claims were attempts by Iran to target US Navy carriers. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely constrained, with oil prices rising as a result.
Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM Oil Associates, noted that oil investors are expressing their views on the impact of the latest escalation in the Middle East 'in an unambiguous way.' He added that unless the Strait reopens and oil flows again uninterruptedly, supply will not be aligned with demand in the foreseeable future.
