Brent Plummets $100 Amid French Plan to Release Crude Reserves
The price of Brent oil plummeted by nearly $100 due to a proposed release of crude reserves by France. The initiative, which aims to put 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil on the market, was presented in a virtual meeting of European officials. According to Bloomberg, the proposal calls for European Union countries to release 50 million barrels of diesel, while International Energy Agency (IEA) member countries would contribute another 50 million barrels of oil.
The move comes amid growing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and new sanctions on Iran. The United States has threatened to veto diesel exports, which has sparked concerns among European leaders. China has also canceled fuel shipments scheduled for October, further exacerbating the situation.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the US is committed to helping stabilize global energy markets, but warned that European partners must accelerate their commitments and make additional supplies available immediately.
