Brent Surges Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The oil market is bracing for further price increases due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude has already gained around 5% this week, trading near $88 per barrel, as attacks on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz and the US maritime blockade of Iranian crude continue to exert pressure on global supply chains.
Despite a significant increase in US crude inventories, the market is prioritizing supply security and shipping access over demand conditions. If disruptions persist, Brent could reach $100 per barrel by the end of August, although elevated inventories and demand destruction may temper this trajectory.
The divergent views on 2026 global oil demand growth between OPEC and the International Energy Agency (IEA) are also contributing to market uncertainty. OPEC has trimmed its outlook to 580,000 b/d, while the IEA expects a 1.6 million b/d decline in demand.
