Britain Offers Military Support to Saudi Arabia Against Houthi Attacks
Britain has agreed to provide limited military support to Saudi Arabia in response to attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that the Royal Air Force will offer air-to-air refueling of Saudi planes for a matter of weeks, with the agreement subject to review.
The move comes as the conflict between the Houthis and Yemen's Saudi-backed government has reignited, with the Houthi launching missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia. The rebels have also declared a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea, targeting Saudi-linked vessels and oil facilities.
Burnham said he was acting to secure Britain's interests and protect regional stability, particularly as some 12% of world trade passes through the Bab el-Mandeb. The U.K. has condemned the Houthi attacks and will work with partners to support regional stability, protect civilians, and ensure humanitarian access.
