Bulgaria Takes Helm in Bid to Secure Black Sea Shipping Routes
Bulgaria is taking steps to secure its Black Sea shipping routes, planning an international initiative to ensure freedom and safety of navigation in the region. According to Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova, Sofia aims to work with countries in the area and other interested parties on a joint agreement to reduce risks to civilian shipping.
Iotova stated that Bulgaria views Black Sea security as crucial to its national security, aiming for the region to become an area of safe transport, trade, energy, and digital corridors. This comes as Egypt, India, and Turkey presented proposals on safe navigation in the Black Sea on September 23, while the EU separately called for an end to attacks on civilian vessels and port infrastructure.
The importance of stable Black Sea routes is particularly critical for agricultural markets, as they handle significant volumes of Ukrainian grain exports. The UN Security Council has also highlighted the significance of maintaining these routes for food security in African countries.
