Bulgaria's Sunflower Boom Brings Little Financial Gain
Despite record sunflower yields in Bulgaria this year, farmers are struggling to turn a profit due to rising costs and stagnant prices. According to industry representatives, higher production has not led to increased profits for producers because of increasing expenses for fertilizer, fuel, and services.
The purchase price for sunflower seeds is remaining close to last year's level, while cooking oil prices in stores are higher than they were at the same time last year. This discrepancy has left producers with largely unchanged profits from last year.
Grain producer Nedyalko Statev said that machinery investments and labor expenses have increased, leaving producers needing both higher yields and prices to improve their returns. 'We also have losses to cover, so it would be good to see an average sunflower yield exceeding 300 kg. And a price of 500-550 euros, specifically for this crop, would be quite good,' Statev said.
