Bulgaria’s wheat exports have surged to record levels in the 2026/27 marketing year, with shipments reaching 3.1 million tons in the first four months, a 65% increase from the same period last year. This marks the highest export volume for the July, October period, exceeding the five-year average by over 30%. The strong performance follows a record harvest of 7.65 million tons in 2026, leaving Bulgaria with an estimated 4.4 million tons in wheat stocks. After accounting for domestic consumption needs, approximately 3.3 million tons remain available for export.
Spain has emerged as the top buyer of Bulgarian wheat, importing over 900,000 tons in the four-month period, surpassing the total shipments of the previous marketing year. Other key destinations include Indonesia, Tunisia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, each importing significant volumes. However, exports to Algeria have more than halved, dropping from over 800,000 tons last year to less than 400,000 tons this season, primarily due to quality requirements.
The rapid export pace raises concerns about potential stock shortages in the second half of the 2026/27 season. If the current trend continues, ending stocks could fall to just 200-300,000 tons, posing risks to domestic supply and limiting further export growth.
