Cabinet Hikes Wheat MSP by ₹25, Sets Benchmark at ₹2,610 per Quintal

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹25 per quintal increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat, bringing the rate to ₹2,610 per quintal for the 2027-28 Rabi Marketing Season. This decision was announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting.

The government had previously increased the MSP for wheat by ₹160, from ₹2,425 to ₹2,585 per quintal for the 2026-27 marketing season. The latest increase is smaller in absolute terms but still reflects the government's commitment to providing a remunerative benchmark for wheat growers.

The MSP framework aims to ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce and support food-security objectives. For the 2027-28 marketing season, the government has fixed the MSP at ₹2,610 per quintal, which represents an expected margin of 109% over the all-India weighted average cost of production.

The Cabinet decision comes ahead of the winter sowing period, when farmers begin planning acreage and input purchases for Rabi crops. The Agriculture Ministry will operationalize the approved MSP through the procurement system for the 2027-28 marketing season.
